The Feral Eye

The King has Died

On the eve of Michael Jackson’s death, I made my way up to Harlem’s Apollo theatre round about midnight. This was the origin of Jackson’s climb to fame, after his dad packed the kids in the van and drove straight from Gary, Indiana. MJ was 9.

There was a large gathering, singing, dancing, crying… The King of Pop’s reverberations echoed in the street and in the hearts.

I’ve been on an MJ tribute mix binge ever since. Download DJ Ayer’s mix here from The Fader, top notch.

New Yankee Joint - Day n Night

Had the luck of grabbing a Yankee ticket from my boy Nitin last week. Got to check the new diggs. Pretty nice. Loved my cold, charred hamburger for $10. The $5 bottle of water washed it down sweetly.

Robi Bear and Hidden Japanese Tranquility

I love getting lucky. Last night was blessed to be at the right place and right time in the space time vortex. Robi Bear had a pop-up art show in Nat Rahav’s space on 14th St. Nice little show he put together in two weeks. The thing that made it special for me was an amazing congregation of musical and artistic heavy hitters, Dego from 4hero, artist Ian Wright and Bill McMullen, Geology spinning too… was very nice.

Almost more special was the invite to the private invite-only Japanese restaurant “Bohemian” on Great Jones St. This is a very special place, as it was at one point an Andy Warhol-owned building where Basquiat lived, worked and collaborated until his untimely passing. The generous and talented Tomoaki Morita let us visit and we were astounded at the elegance, tranquility and ambiance… We were immediately put at peace. They had prepared a tasting menu of delectables and sake; absolutely top quality.

Sometimes in the Spring I get out of the train on my way home and the light hits just right up Fulton St.
